  5.     Love is blooming in Brazil, where private affairs can arouse
  6. public passions. Justice Minister Bernardo Cabral, 58, was
  7. forced to resign this month after the press revealed his
  8. romance with fellow Cabinet member Zelia Cardoso de Mello, the
  9. Economy Minister. Their relationship became common knowledge
  10. after Cabral, who is married, and Cardoso de Mello, who is
  11. single, openly danced cheek to cheek at her 37th birthday
  12. party. Cardoso de Mello's love life had become the subject of
  13. speculation after a reporter spotted an engagement ring on her
  14. finger.

  16.     Despite a poll that said 90% of Brazilians did not consider
  17. the affair sufficient reason for dismissal, President Fernando
  18. Collor de Mello was worried that the scandal might damage his
  19. administration's credibility. His sensitivity is
  20. understandable: three weeks ago, a woman from the state of
  21. Alagoas claimed that the President was the father of her
  22. 10-year-old son. Last month a candidate for governor in the
  23. state of Rio Grande do Sul was hurt by allegations from his
  24. former wife that he had deserted their three children. And in
  25. the state of Amazonas, gubernatorial candidate Gilberto
  26. Mestrinho was attacked by his opponents for having nine
  27. children by four women. But the snickering slogan "Vote for
  28. Mestrinho -- he could be your father" backfired: Mestrinho won
  29. by a landslide.
